Ndjerareou means “he who builds the road” in Ngambay. Being a family spread across the world means the road between us can be long, but the love always endures. When we are together the stories are rich, the laughter is genuine, and the food is delicious.

Minga taught me to cook a few beloved Chadian recipes when Sophia was tiny. Now she’s back in our world and Sophia is hungry to learn her recipes for life, faith, beauty, wisdom and joy.

Minga’s celebrated spinach recipe is available on my website. #grateful
God makes leaders, he casts them of precious metal God makes leaders, he casts them of precious metal and entrusts them to wobbly parents who have to learn how to protect them in the refining process of life. But the fire only makes them shine, makes a mother marvel that beauty can come from the exquisite mess of it all.

She’s 17! She’s got beauty, brains, and a tender heart. God has made her an incredible woman. Her courage, joy and heart to serve astound us every day.

All she wanted for her birthday was a tiara to wear with her school uniform. I can’t say no to that!

Monday morning birthdays can be a brutal. When our school prayer team asked if we’d brave the dawn to encourage her classmates she did it with her determined fierceness, dancing with a smile. What a way to start the year!
I was nine years old when my parents informed me w I was nine years old when my parents informed me we were moving to Eswatini, (formerly Swaziland) a tiny kingdom perched on the cusp of South Africa. The only information I had about our new home were two paragraphs in my encyclopedia Britanica and Paul Simon’s Graceland featuring the songs of LadySmith Black Mambazo.

“Homeless, we are homeless,” the rich chorus called to me as we packed all our worldly goods into a shipping container to launch ourselves off the edge of the world.

We skidded to a stop in the Southern Hemisphere, the rhythm of life completely upended. Yet a familiar sound was there to welcome me, the blended texture of geography and culture between the Zulu and Swazi people. The gentle layered harmonies, the percussive clicks of the language, the vibrant traditional dances we learned in my new school echoed the color and joy of my new home.

Today LadySmith Black Mambazo is a beloved tradition in our home, sacred to each generation. I’m delighted the group will be performing at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra 3/30/23. @dallassymphony @ladysmithblackmambazo60
“Friends are like training wheels for a bike, th “Friends are like training wheels for a bike, they always keep you from falling down.” -Jerry Craft, the New Kid.

The true test of a story is not the nobility of it’s content, but how many times a child falls into the escape of it’s pages to find refuge and joy on every dog eared page. New Kid, Class Act (and soon to be released Class Trip) are exceptional stories in graphic novel and audio book.

As a writer with a passion for diverse literature, I was thrilled when New Kid hit our library shelves. But as a mom, I loved watching this story hook my young readers again and again.

Story is a powerful tool in the hearts and minds of a child. Too often we (the grown ups) make it too boring, serious or hard to be swept away into world of imagination. Mr. Craft has woven a witty world and tender story into his vibrant graphic novels that give an uplifting perspective on middle school.

What a pleasure to meet @jerrycraft and his lovely wife today in Arlington. Thank you @arlingtontxlib for this moment.

In 2019, a dear friend called to ask me to help @saradaniellehill who’d written a book. I love these moments, and introduced Sara Hill into our @arthousedallas community where we bring our dreams and far fetched ideas into a space that nourishes them until they grow to life.

Hope in the Darkness was the first step in her vision to encourage the soul and hearts of medical professionals. Sara has faithfully poured herself into the vision God sparked inside her throughout the pandemic and beyond. Today, she launched Spirit Lead Me and has grown a thriving ministry (Undercurrents) in multiple locations.
We’ve loved robotics since Sophia introduced us We’ve loved robotics since Sophia introduced us to the sport in 2014. The wise and wonderful Mr. Brodernick got us hooked on First Lego League. It’s a supercharged combo of science fair, speech contest and robotics competition. Isaac’s been a fan of this program for years and we’re extremely thankful to Stephen and Kristen McConnell, original UME robotics students and new parents, who took on the epic task of introducing a new generation to this rewarding sport.

The Top Gun Mad Bricks are 10 incredible fourth graders experiencing the sensory roller coaster of fear, panic and pride that is an FLL competition. Thank you Wilson Peppard for teaching us about local electricity. Thank you Sophia for cheering on your little brother as he finds his own path. Thank you Isaac for trusting me with your team. Coaching robotics is WAY out of my comfort zone but doing hard things with your kids reap priceless memories.
