May is AAPI Heritage Month. AAPI stands for Asian May is AAPI Heritage Month. AAPI stands for Asian American and Pacific Islander. The term describes a diverse and fast-growing population of 23 million Americans that includes roughly 50 ethnic groups with roots in more than 40 countries. I adore immigrant stories,they offer an exceptional window into the American experience and a bridge into a rich cultural heritage. This multicultural mama is so thrilled by the stories I’m enjoying with my family. A story is a wonderful opportunity to introduce different perspectives from the comfort of your home. Stories engage the heart and the mind and build bridges into important parts of our world. “It is time for parents to teach young people ea “It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.” -Maya Angelou I stumbled down memory lane today and found pictures of my daughter and her beloved Dora the Explorer doll. In a single heart beat I was that twenty-something mama struggling to reflect my daughters brilliance back at her. Back then I ached for a tiny glimpse of our unique world in the faces and the spaces she was watching with an insatiable curiosity. She’s driving now so this was quite a while ago (not in my mama heart) but back then every every moment seemed harder than it should be. Hair products, band-aids, crayons, even appropriate shades of undergarments have diversified to include a broader range of beauty. My daughter and I marvel at the array of multicultural heroes and toys that line our shelves today. But I also realize I live in one of the largest, most diverse cities in America. We marvel at how far we’ve come but still ache for how far we have to go. There are little eyes looking up at the world, into the shelves of their library, scrolling through a device, hungry to see themselves reflected back with dignity and delight. This is the lifeblood of why I write, why I constantly explore. It’s why I create. Its also why I’m passionate about creative hospitality. Creating spaces that inspire multicultural stories, scripts, and songs. I have the privilege of living in a beautiful, rich corner of the world. It’s not the natural scenic beauty that causes me to wonder. It’s the people and their warm smiles, the jokes in car line, their family recipes shared over the fence, their willingness to step outside their culture and comfort zone to welcome me. This is the magic I want to inspire my children, the moments I want to share with the world. Will you join me? There is always room for more. It was an exceptional evening of globetrotting adventure fiction hosted by @monkeyanddogbooks Award winning author, and friend @sfrhoads.author recommended these two wonderful series (Calculated by Nova McBee and Enhanced by Kade) and the trio invited us into their world building via their international experience, it was an impactful conversation on global imagination. It was a lovely event but the best part has been diving into their heart pounding YA adventures.
